Padel in Newcastle: our guide
Updated October 2026
Ask where to play padel in Newcastle and the honest answer is mostly "over the river". Three of the six venues in our list are in Gateshead, and the two largest, with 11 indoor courts each, are in Gateshead and Sunderland. Only one, in North Tyneside, is on the north bank.
As of October 2026 we list six venues within nine miles of the centre, with 38 courts in total. Twenty-eight of those are indoor, and every venue is pay and play on Playtomic, which makes Tyneside one of the simpler areas to book.
Gateshead, the coast and Sunderland
Gateshead, south of the Tyne
The nearest courts to the centre are at Powerleague Gateshead in NE8, two miles out, with five canopied outdoor courts and parking and changing rooms.
By the Metrocentre, Padel Up Tyneside has three indoor courts with panoramic glass and a singles court, plus a café. It opens 6am to 11pm every day.
On the eastern side of Gateshead, Pikup Padel in NE10 is one of the two largest venues in our list, with 11 indoor courts, a singles court and coaching.
North Tyneside
The only venue on the Newcastle side of the river is Project Padel in NE12, with three indoor courts and coaching, plus parking and changing.
The coast
Down at South Shields, South Shields and Westoe Club has five outdoor courts, bookable by anyone on Playtomic, with parking.
Sunderland
At the edge of our nine-mile circle, True Padel in Sunderland matches Pikup with 11 indoor courts. It has a singles court and is the only venue in our Tyneside list that records racket hire.
Picking between them
For a bigger group or a regular slot, Pikup and True Padel have the most courts, so there is more chance of two free at once. Padel Up opens at 6am, handy for a game before work, and it is the shortest walk from a station. Powerleague Gateshead is the closest to the city centre, two miles away.
Under cover when the weather turns
Four venues are fully indoor: Pikup Padel and True Padel (11 courts each), Padel Up (three) and Project Padel (three). Between them that's 28 indoor courts, all pay and play.
The ten outdoor courts split evenly. Powerleague Gateshead's five are under a canopy, which keeps rain off the court. The five at South Shields and Westoe have no cover in our data, and on the coast the wind is part of the game, so they're best kept for dry, calm days.
What it costs
We have one sampled price for the area. At Padel Up Tyneside, a court cost from £25 an hour at the cheapest time to £45 an hour at peak, checked on 4 October 2026. That's for the whole court, so between four players it works out at about £6.25 to £11.25 each.
The other venues list prices on their Playtomic pages. Peak and off-peak rates differ at most venues, so if your diary allows a weekday daytime game, compare that slot before booking an evening one.
Getting there by Metro, train or car
Tyneside's Metro and local rail lines reach every venue in our list, though some walks are longer than others:
- Padel Up Tyneside, 6 minutes from Metrocentre station
- Powerleague Gateshead, 12 minutes from Dunston
- Project Padel, 14 minutes from Palmersville Metro
- True Padel, 19 minutes from Pallion Metro
- South Shields and Westoe Club, 24 minutes from South Shields Metro
- Pikup Padel, 38 minutes from Pelaw Metro
All six venues have parking, so the car is the easier choice for Pikup in particular.
Finding a game
Every venue here books through Playtomic, so one app covers the whole area. If you haven't used it before, our guide to booking a court in the UK walks through setting up and paying.
Playtomic's open matches are the easiest way to play without organising a four yourself: you join a game at your level that needs players, and each player can pay their own share in the app. For other ways to meet people to play with, see finding padel partners.
Project Padel and Pikup Padel list coaching, and True Padel is the one place in our data with racket hire. If you're thinking about lessons, our look at padel lessons covers what to expect. Three venues also have a singles court (Padel Up, Pikup and True Padel), handy when you can only find one other player.
Coming to Gosforth
Pure Padel Gosforth is under construction, with 10 indoor courts expected in December 2026. It would be the largest venue on the Newcastle side of the Tyne, well ahead of the three courts at Project Padel. Follow its progress on our courts opening soon page.
Nearby
The next area page down the coast is Middlesbrough, 31 miles away.
The list above is kept up to date as venues change their courts and booking setup, and the Gosforth courts will join it once they open. If you're about to play singles for the first time, our rules and scoring guide is a sensible place to start.
