Updated October 2026
Padel in the East of England leans heavily towards London. As of October 2026 we list 80 venues and 231 courts across Hertfordshire, Essex and East Anglia, and most of them sit in the commuter belt of south Hertfordshire and south Essex. The further you get from the M25, the thinner the map becomes.
70 of the region's courts are indoors and 161 are outdoor, so fewer than one court in three is fully under cover. 52 venues are pay and play and 51 take bookings online. Courts are spread across 54 towns and villages, and Norwich is the only place north of Cambridge with a double-figure count.
Bushey, on the Watford border, has 16 courts at four venues, level with Norwich for the most in the region. Watford itself adds five, and our Watford guide covers both. St Albans has 11 courts across two venues (seven of them indoors at one), Broxbourne eight and Hatfield six. Hitchin's five courts are all indoors. Hertford, Tring, Shenley, Hemel Hempstead and Colliers End have two or three courts each.
One Barnet venue, with four courts, also appears in this region's list, although Barnet is a London borough. If you live on that side, our London guide covers the capital's venues next door.
Brentwood has 13 courts at three venues and Colchester 11 at four. Basildon has nine, Chelmsford and Maldon eight each, and Witham and Harlow seven each. Southend-on-Sea and Waltham Abbey have six apiece. The Chelmsford and Colchester area pages list the venues around each town.
The Essex edge of London adds Chigwell, Buckhurst Hill and Epping, with three or four courts each, mostly indoors. Grays, Stansted and Feering fill in the gaps.
Ipswich has six indoor courts at two venues, with four more just outside town at Copdock and Washbrook. Our Ipswich guide covers them. Bury St Edmunds has five courts and Haverhill three, all outdoor.
Cambridge has five outdoor courts at two venues, and Impington, on the northern edge of the city, has four more. Ely has four and Pilsgate two. The Cambridge area page brings the city's venues together.
Norwich has 16 courts at four venues, half of them indoors, and the Norwich area page lists them. Beyond the city, padel thins to small rural venues: East Barsham with three courts, Salle with two indoor courts, and Diss with two.
These are the twelve largest venues in the region by court count:
No venue in the region reaches double figures. The largest has eight courts, so the East of England is a region of mid-sized clubs rather than big padel centres. Three of the twelve are for members; the other nine are pay and play.
Much of the region's padel is in towns, not cities. Brentwood's 13 courts are more than Cambridge and Ipswich have between them. Bushey, Broxbourne, Basildon, Maldon, Witham and Harlow each have seven courts or more.
Maldon is a good example of how far padel has spread in Essex: a small town on the Blackwater estuary with eight courts across two venues. Hitchin, in north Hertfordshire, has five, all of them indoors.
Outside the 40 busiest towns, another 14 places have a single venue with one court each. A one-court venue can be handy for a regular game close to home, but for more choice of slots you may need to drive to one of the bigger towns.
Only 70 of the region's 231 courts are indoors. The biggest groups are in Norwich (eight), St Albans (seven), Chelmsford (six), Ipswich (six) and Hitchin (five). Brentwood and Colchester have four each, and Chigwell has four indoor courts of its own.
Many of the busier towns are all outdoor: Broxbourne, Maldon, Witham, Harlow, Southend-on-Sea, Waltham Abbey, Bury St Edmunds and Cambridge list no indoor courts. The east is one of the drier parts of the country, which helps, but a covered outdoor court keeps off the rain and not the cold, so dress for it between November and March.
For a warm game in winter, Norwich, St Albans, Chelmsford, Ipswich and Hitchin have the most indoor courts, and the Essex edge of London has a few more.
Every venue in the East of England is listed above, in alphabetical order, with courts and booking links. Our guide to padel in the UK puts the region's numbers in the national picture.
