Padel in North East: our guide

Updated October 2026

South Shields And Westoe Club, 5 outdoor courts

Padel in the North East comes in fairly few venues, but many of them are big and most are under a roof. As of October 2026 we list 27 venues with 111 courts, and 86 of those courts are indoors, about three in every four. In a corner of England where winter evenings get dark by four, that is a useful balance.

The courts gather in two places: Tyneside and Wearside in the north, and Teesside with Darlington in the south. County Durham fills the space between them, and Northumberland has only a handful. Almost every venue, 24 of the 27, is pay and play, and 21 take bookings online.

Tyne, Wear and Tees

Teesside is the larger cluster. Stockton-on-Tees has 20 courts at five venues, 12 of them indoor, Darlington 13 at three, Middlesbrough seven and Hartlepool six. Guisborough adds two more. Our Middlesbrough guide covers the venues on both banks of the Tees.

The Teesside towns each have a slightly different mix. Stockton has the most variety: Padel Up has eight indoor courts, while David Lloyd has five outdoor ones for members. Darlington pairs Pure Padel's seven indoor courts with four outdoor courts at the rugby club. In Middlesbrough, Vida Del Padel at Eston has five of the town's seven courts, and Hartlepool's six courts at two venues are all indoor.

In the north, Gateshead has 19 courts at three venues and Sunderland 11 at a single venue. South Shields adds five. Newcastle upon Tyne itself lists one venue with three courts, so the nearest larger venues are across the river in Gateshead. Our Newcastle guide covers everything within reach of the city, Gateshead and Sunderland included.

County Durham sits between the two. Durham city has nine courts, Shildon five, Stanley three and Thinford two, every one of them indoors.

The biggest venues

Two venues share the top spot, and the five largest are all indoor and pay and play.

Darlington Rugby Football Club, 4 outdoor courts

True Padel runs two of the five largest, in Sunderland and Durham, with 20 indoor courts between them.

Membership is rarely a barrier here. Only three of the 27 venues are not pay and play, David Lloyd Teesside among them, so in most places you can book a court as a one-off. If you are choosing where to start, the big indoor venues in Gateshead, Sunderland, Durham, Stockton and Darlington give you the most courts to pick a slot from, and Shildon and Eston are the next largest.

Smaller towns

Outside the main towns, the numbers drop quickly. Shildon's five indoor courts at Padel Tonic are the most of any smaller town, and Rural Racquets at Sedgefield, which we list under Stockton, has four. Stanley and Blyth have three indoor courts each, and Thinford and Guisborough two.

Northumberland is the thinnest part of the region. Beyond Blyth, there is one court each at Hexham, Alnwick and Morpeth; the Alnwick and Morpeth courts are indoor and the Hexham one is outdoor. If you live in the north of the county, expect to drive south to Tyneside for a choice of courts.

The four Northumberland venues hold six courts between them, roughly what a single mid-sized venue in Gateshead or Stockton offers. Blyth, on the coast north of Tyneside, is the largest of them with three indoor courts.

Indoor courts and winter play

With 86 of 111 courts indoors, most games here can go ahead whatever the weather. All five of the largest venues are fully indoor, and so are Sunderland, Durham, Hartlepool, Shildon and Stanley in their entirety.

The 25 outdoor courts sit mostly at clubs and multi-sport centres: David Lloyd and another venue in Stockton, Powerleague in Gateshead, South Shields and Westoe Club, Darlington Rugby Football Club, two courts in Middlesbrough and the single court at Hexham. South Shields and Hexham are the only towns with no indoor court, and South Shields is a short trip from Gateshead and Sunderland.

Wind and early sunsets in winter make indoor courts the practical choice for evening games from late autumn. Each venue page in the list above shows whether outdoor courts are covered.

Every North East venue is listed alphabetically above with its booking link, court numbers and opening hours, and the list is updated as venues change. For how the apps and pricing work, read our guide to booking a padel court in the UK.
